Add or Remove Chat Widget from Your Website

Add or Remove Chat Widget from Your Website

It can happen that you want to use the live chat on your website, i.e., you want your visitors and customers to be able to contact you via live chat. However, the live chat widget just doesn't fit your website design. It can either cover up some important information or function, or it looks great on one site but bad on another.

This is why we offer you the option to hide the chat widget from your website if you wish but still keep the live chat function available.

How to Set Up the Live Chat Widget Removal

You can find the settings for removing the live chat widget from your website in the Inbox settings, under Chat style.

Here, you have 2 options:

  • Mobile/tablet visibility: If this option is turned on, the live chat widget will be visible on mobile and tablet view. If you turn this off, the live chat will not be visible on mobiles and tablets; it will only be visible on desktops.
  • Desktop visibility: If this option is turned on, the live chat widget will be visible on the given website the live chat is installed in a desktop view. If you turn this off, the live chat will not be visible on desktops; it will only be visible on mobiles and tablets.
  • You also have the option to turn off the visibility for mobiles, tablets, and desktops.

CAUTION: Add the Live Chat Option to Your Website as a Button

If you decide to turn off the visibility of the live chat widget on either desktops or mobiles and tablets, it is extremely important to provide a button somewhere on your website so that people can open the live chat and contact you.

You simply have to copy this code to anywhere where you want the button to be on your website:

<button onclick="window.open_sf_chat(); ">Help</button>

This will create a button for you with the text "Help", and once someone clicks on it, the live chat will open.

Advanced Customization: Controlling Visibility with JavaScript

For developers looking to manage the live chat widget’s visibility dynamically via JavaScript, additional properties are available to customize the display settings further. The window.chat_style object includes two Boolean properties:

  • desktop_visible – Shows visibility on desktop devices (1024px width and above)
  • mobile_visible – Shows visibility on mobile devices (1023px width and below)

With these properties, you can create custom scripts to adjust visibility based on device type or screen size, enabling the live chat widget to appear only when and where you need it.
